November Newsletter 2014

Fall is that “in between ” season where we mourn the warm balmy days of Summer, yet are excited about the change in the air , the beautiful clothes the trees adorn themselves with, and the smell and crunch of falling leaves beneath our feet. Nature begins to go into its hibernation for the upcoming colder months. The birds change their plumage, the flowers have now become seed heads.
TIP: While finishing yard cleanup, you can help nature and wildlife by leaving dead seedheads on flowers for
the birds to feast on during the winter. And
rake your leaves under shrubs to act as
mulch. They’ll harbor insects for ground dwelling
birds to eat. And, come spring,
those dead leaves, grasses and plant stems
will be a treasure trove for birds searching for
nest material.Thursday Yoga Class is now available with Elizabeth Gresher!

Sage Honey

A Remedy you can make yourself for Cold and Flu Season!

A spoonful of this in hot water will soothe sore throats, quell coughs, and conquer colds.
This is a Honey Infusion, combining the properties of Honey and those of  Sage. This is  an “extra” recipe that can be put together just in time to have it ready for cold and flu season. It’s even better if made with your own home-grown Sage, but don’t let that stop you from trying this quick easy recipe. Procure some from a friend or buy some in your local store. You will want  to have this ready for your cold-season medicine chest. Use local pure raw honey for the best home-made  remedy!
  • Cut back your sage (or rosemary, or lavender, or thyme) plant now; winter is on the way.
  • Cut up your pruned off pieces of sage and fill a glass jar with the pieces.
  • Add honey.
  • Stir well with a chopstick.
  • Repeat the above two steps until the jar is really, really full of honey and herb.
  • Label with date; ready to use in 3-6 weeks.

November  Recipe
Homemade Apple Chips  ( AND they are Gluten free!)A recipe to use those wonderful  apples from this years crop! This makes about 25 chipsIngredients:1 large Granny Smith apple
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamonInstructions:

Preheat the oven to 225 degrees F.  Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

Using a mandoline, slice the apples as thinly as you can.  Mix the sugar and the cinnamon in a shallow bowl and dip the apple slices lightly in the mixture, just lightly coating them.  Lay the slices on the baking sheets, about 12 slices per sheet.  Bake for 1 hour.  Remove one pan at a time and flip the apple slices over with tongs.  When you return pans to oven, also rotate them – put the one that was on the top rack on the bottom.  Bake for one more hour.  Remove pans from oven. Apple slices will start to harden up pretty quickly.  Remove with tongs.

Green Tea Supplements Prevent Flu Better Than VaccinationThese excerpts taken from Natural News and Science Daily, By authors Ethan Evers Phd , second article reprinted from materials provided by Mayo Clinic.Flu season is now in full swing and seasonal vaccinations are being pushed from every corner. Nonetheless, a recent clinical trial showed that green tea-based supplements reduced the risk of flu by 75%. This is far better than the 60% risk reduction recently reported in the Lancet for vaccinations. Given that green tea provides a host of other health benefits and none of the risks of injections, it would appear to be a far superior alternative to vaccination.See the entire article in Natural News: ->

Magnesium Levels and Premenstrual Syndrome

Studies have revealed that women who suffer from premenstrual symptoms have significantly lower magnesium levels by comparison. This is a pretty significant discovery given the sheer amount of women suffering through PMS on a monthly basis.

If we take a step back and consider how critical magnesium is to virtually every process in the human body, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that deficiency can lead to such a painful and exhausting outcome for those who aren’t getting sufficient amounts.

In fact, magnesium deficiency has been linked to an impressive number of women’s health issues including preeclampsia, bone disorders, depression, cramping, low energy, migraines, and mood swings. Not surprisingly, magnesium has also been tied to hormone secretion and balance, which  can severely impact our entire fertility cycle, including menstruation.

And to solidify magnesium’s place as the ultimate female essential, it’s also been proven to help with:

  • Migraine
  • Fluid retention
  • Fatigue & low energy
  • Muscle weakness
  • Brain fog
  • Cravings (deficiency-related)

Losing Your Magnesium

Women, I would say, statistically have the cards stacked against them when it comes to maintaining sufficient magnesium levels. Fluctuations in hormones, increased irritability and stress, pain, and the entire circus of symptoms that accompany our cycle are all factors that exacerbate already low levels of this crucial mineral.

Of course, as females, we also have to contend with  those additional hurdles such as hormone-based birth control methods, calcium supplements for “strong bones,” and pregnancy & breastfeeding ̶  all of which cause an excessive loss of magnesium from the body.

But more than that, we as a society are having more and more difficulty achieving adequate magnesium levels as a whole. Low magnesium in our soil translates to low magnesium in our food… which adds a hurdle for even the most conscientious eaters. Then of course, processing further reduces magnesium levels.

And these are only a few of numerous components that may cause magnesium deficiency.

Did you also know , – that  chocolate is a great source of magnesium, as well ?
